Introducing the Chicken Street Trading Company

Named after the iconic Chicken Street, or "Koch-e Murgha," in Kabul, our online store will bring the essence of this famous market street to your doorstep. 

Chicken Street is renowned for its offerings of antiques, carpets, gemstones, handicrafts, and old coins. 

In a time when post-World War II tranquility led to the emergence of the "hippie trail," adventurous travelers, often referred to as "hippies," embarked on a lengthy overland journey from Western Europe to South and Southeast Asia. Along this trail, they made memorable stops in Afghanistan, particularly in Kabul. Here, they would indulge in a shopping spree for unique items like coats, bracelets, and exotic souvenirs, while stocking up on supplies for their onward journey. 

However, the era of the hippie trail was short-lived, brought to an end by the Saur (Red) Revolution and the subsequent Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, plunging the country into a 43-year period of turmoil. In September 2021, after the American and allied forces drew down their presence in Afghanistan, the nation found itself in a state of peace for the first time in the new millennium. 

Now, as Afghans finally enjoy peace after two generations of war, the vibrant shops of Chicken Street are opening their doors to the world once again.

We're excited to share that Chicken Street Trading Company is bringing the essence of Chicken Street directly to you via e-commerce and various social media platforms. 

Chicken Street Trading Company will serve as a hub for an ever-expanding assortment of collectibles, including antiques, coins, currency, handicrafts, scrip, stamps, and more, all sourced from Afghanistan and beyond, and all available for purchase. 

While we're starting with a strong focus on coins, we have grand plans to diversify our offerings, mirroring the eclectic selection found in the shops on Chicken Street. 

As we establish our physical store in Kabul, which we anticipate by no later than Spring 2025, more of our inventory will be directly sourced from the heart of Chicken Street itself.
